Here's a couple of links that were a response to a similar question that came in to us. In my response I shared my personal testimony of a time of questioning in my life.
How do I know I am a true Christian?

Tracie Putnam's response Part 1

Tracie Putnam's response Part 2

I will be glad to help in any way. If it's more convenient for you to talk about this, we can set up a phone appointment. Just email me and let me know what time is best for you, and I will make sure I'm available. This is the most important thing you can be thinking on right now, please don't let anything distract you or discourage you. The Bible says those who call on Him will be saved, and for those who are saved . . . we can know for sure!

I'm praying for you,
God bless,
Tracie

Advice Regarding Minister Boyfriend

Return to original post

When my husband was ordained a minister; an older, wiser, minister's wife shared valuable knowledge from her former years. I'm glad she did! She told my husband to listen to the discernment of the woman God puts to walk along side him. She went on to say that there may be times he can't see potential danger with the opposite sex, but your wife will. My husband and I were dating when she told him this, but since he knew I was the one and we would eventually marry, he treated me with the same respect.

I have also treated him respect by not complaining about every hug he received. In my early years, I had an aunt that shared her wisdom with me. She said, "If you never complain about all the little things, your husband will know to listen when you speak." I was young (approx. 10) and wondered why she was telling me this, but now I know this was one of God's ways of preparing me to be a minister's wife.

My husband and I have never had a problem with jealousy. I knew he would get hugs, and he knew I would get hugs. We're in ministry, and we're in the south. Southern Christians, hug a lot! However, with that being said, there are appropriate hugs and inappropriate hugs, and that is where it is important to listen to one another.

So, I guess the real question is this, "Do you feel this lady was giving inappropriate affection?" I know your answer is yes, or you wouldn't have written in to us. I have to say, while I don't know all the circumstances, I am inclined to agree with you. I think a hug, a kiss, and an I love you from the opposite sex to their minister is entirely inappropriate. A casual hug and an "I appreciate you" is appropriate given the right circumstances. There again, we can't know her heart or her intentions, but God will give you the discernment. I think He has!

You're right being a new creature means we think differently and act differently. We allow Christ through the Holy Spirit to work in us. You can trust Him at work in you, and you are safe to act under His authority. Truth and love are always right. However, love does not mean allowing inappropriate behavior. Truth speaks up and love is active (requires action). In this circumstance, it's not just about you and your boyfriend. It's about protecting him from appearances of evil, which will harm his ministry and filter down to the church.

I think you need to talk to your boyfriend (minister) and tell him how you feel, and ask him to work with you. By that, I mean go ahead and decide together what you think is appropriate and inappropriate, how you will handle such situations in the future. Including if this woman comes up to him again. Help him determine what he can say to be kind, yet at the same time to let her know that he's not comfortable with her actions. It's better to correct one than to offend some. He is responsible for what he allows, and this is something the enemy can use to cause confusion and division within the body.

In twenty-five years of ministry, I've only had to warn my husband once! The reason is because he had set for himself some guidelines. He did this to protect himself, his marriage, his ministry, the church, and even the community. I think he was wise for it! Some examples of his guidelines are as follows: He never closes his office door if the opposite sex is present. He prefers my presence, a deacons presence, her husband, or someone else present, if he is counseling a woman. He doesn't face a woman who hugs him; he stands side ways and he doesn't embrace. He only offers one arm with light taps, so his hand isn't misunderstood. There are some good minister's manuals with such great advice in them. These books are full of wisdom for pastors from pastors who have already walked in their shoes and know full well what they might encounter. You might consider purchasing your boyfriend one of these books.

Make a commitment to trust each other's discernment in such situations. Let him know that you won't be nagging out of jealousy, but will let him know when you discern danger. If you are planning future marriage, God intends you to be a ministry team!

I'm here for you anytime, and I'm praying for you. Please let me know how you're doing, and let me know how things are going.

Love in Christ,
Tracie

Daughter Involved In Gay Relationship

Return to original post

Dear Sharon,

My heart goes out to you! I wish I could give you a perfect formula to remedy the heartache and the whole situation in a matter of minutes, with no record of memory. But the truth is God is faithful! And when we hurt, it is never in vain. He has a purpose! He is with you and your daughter, and He will not forsake you! Keep looking to Him to be your guide, and He will use this too for good! He is a trustworthy God . . . this is my first response. It's what I tell myself in my times of uncertaintly, and every time without fail He proves Himself! The following is my second response, specific to your request . . .

The wise thing to do is to take action on her behalf. We have to be diligent to train our children in godliness; it doesn’t just happen. The world has far too great of an influence on our children. Our children are human and if they are left alone to be guided by the flesh they will be led astray from what is right and best. There is certainly an enemy who takes advantage of the world’s influence and the desires of the flesh to influence your daughter, as well. His goal is to see her destroyed through sexual perversion. You have every right to stand up and fight for your child. There are things you can do to help your daughter. Acting as if there were no problem, would be easy to do, but the results would not be good. To do the right thing is difficult, but your daughter is worth every effort. You said, “I want to approach this in a Godly, loving fashion but I still want her to know the seriousness of these actions.” This is exactly what God wants you to do. Love her, and teach her!

Eight Steps to consider:

Step One and Two:
The greatest thing you can do is to make sure that your relationship with Jesus Christ is right, and PRAY! I Peter 3:12 says, “For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.” Like David ask God to search your heart, “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting,” Psalm 139:23-24. While we can’t do anything to earn our salvation, we do have a responsibility in choosing holiness, and God is looking for those whose heart is perfect toward Him so He can show Himself strong on their behalf (2 Chronicles 16:9a). He can show Himself strong in this situation with your daughter, and He can use you to bring her closer to Him, and closer to freedom. She will be affected by your unhindered prayers!

Step Three:
Love her unconditionally, just as Christ loves us! Forgive her as Christ forgives. You said, “I was overwhelmed and I sent her to her father’s house. She has since repented and has asked to come back home. I miss her and I want to believe it, but her facebook page still has her and the girl on it (profile picture)” True repentance is a verb. It’s not only being sorry about what was done, but Is also a turning away with a heart to yield to authority and do what is right, even if it means facing the consequences of wrong actions. Christ loves us regardless, but He forgives us when we show genuine true repentance. You are truly in a difficult place, but it doesn’t sound hopeless. If she will yield to your authority and be willing to make changes, I personally would let her come home, but only with a clear understanding there will be some new rules.

Step Four:
Place boundaries in her life and make sure she understands them. At 17 years old and living at home, she needs to realize that you have been granted her authority by God, but I would approach her with much love and remind her that the boundaries are to keep her safe. The first boundary I would set is no communications with this other girl. From counseling women on this subject, their hardest struggle was letting the relationship, the person go. They wanted to believe they could overcome the problem and still have the friendship. This can not be! One lady I counseled tried, and was miserable until she finally left the relationship all together. Though she was heartbroken that sin had hindered her relationship, she enjoyed peace from a right decision. In your daughters case, the other girl will probably not understand. She may even be angry, but that’s okay. It’s the right thing to do! Your daughter’s question will probably be, “Aren’t we supposed to love everybody” Your answer would be, “Yes, as a human being but not as a friend.” Some people are not meant to be our close companions. Another boundary I would suggest is no internet for a season. I know I have taken the privilege from my kids, and they act like an arm has been severed. They get over it and are better for it! Your daughter will probably throw out all kinds of reasons, excuses, accusations, etc. as to why you should let her, but stand firm!

Step Five:
Add something new and good to her life. I believe very much when something is taken out of someone’s life, something else should be put in that place. In this case, I believe teaching her how to relate to God through quiet time, devotions, bible study, and prayer would be a good replacement for “the friend”. She would be blessed to learn early on that He is the greatest friend. As far as replacing the time on the internet, I think more mom/daughter time would be great. Certainly talk about what she’s learning in her quiet time and give her other scriptures to explore as she reveals things she’s going through, but also just have fun together! Have a picnic, go for a walk, go for a mani/pedi or give each other one at home. Look at lifeway.com and pick a movie with meaning and have a movie night with just the two of you. My daughter and I like to get take out sushi (or pizza), pick up pop corn and “movie candy” make a pallet and enjoy a couple of good movies (one of our favorites is End of the Spear). Take her to the coffee house and get her a frappachino, or go to the mall. I know life is busy, but this is a tremendous investment in your daughter’s life, and one you will greatly enjoy!

Step Six:
Educate yourself on the subject of homosexuality, and pass the information on to your daughter. As a teenager (and many adults) your daughter is probably making decisions based on emotion rather than facts. God tells us His feelings on the subject, and we need to make sure we understand His heart on the matter. If she is a Christian remind her that it’s sin, and Jesus died a cruel death to free her from this. She can enjoy the freedom now, and live the life that God has purposed and planned for her. She will learn His will for her life as she submits her body to him rather than her own desires (Romans 12:1-2).

Resources to help educate:

The Bible- The Bible shows us both in the Old Testament and the New Testament, without question, that homosexual activity is sin.

The Old Testament- The law of God forbids homosexuality: Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. (Leviticus 18:22) Moreover, it is also clear that the Law prescribes death for this abominable sin: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. (Leviticus 20:13)

The New Testament- Romans 1:18-32 teaches the reason people are prone to homosexuality, and what God says they deserve when they continue in sin. God didn’t change His mind, verse 32 says they deserve death! It only takes one look at Sodom and Gomorrah to see how serious God is concerning homosexuality . . . He hates it! It goes against His institution of the family from the beginning!

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 also says that homosexual offenders will not inherit the kingdom of God, “Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” Verse 11 shows hope, repent of your sins and let Jesus wash you clean, let Him sanctify you (be set apart and let your life count for the kingdom of God), and trust that when He justifies, you are a new person who no longer has to submit to the desires of the flesh. In Christ, you are free to walk in the spirit (Galatians 5:16-24), and live a life of victory!

Also, there are ministries and organizations that have websites designed to help in this specific need. However, I wouldn’t give her free reign to find these websites on her own. I would suggest that you look at a few, print out some of the information, and share it with her, or you could use a child safety feature and allow only the websites that you choose. Here’s an example of a couple of websites. I don’t know much about either, so please check them out for yourself before sharing, exodusinternational.org & Stephen Bennett Ministries

Find testimonies of people who have overcome. Their story should show her that it is not like what the homosexual community wants you to believe. Sin is fun only for a season, and it always comes with heartache and destruction in the end. There are people out there who have been in it long enough to see Satan’s lies and they now proclaim truth to help others from going down this path.

Step Seven:
Remember your daughter has to make mistakes in order to understand the precious gift of Grace. While we want to protect our children, God will allow ugly things to come into their lives in order for them to see their need for Him. Some learn easier and quicker than others, some take a lifetime. Your daughter will have an advantage having a godly mother praying and acting on her behalf. Remind her often that you love her, but also let her know that you have expectations of her. Let her know she will reap benefits and blessings for doing right and she will suffer consequences, both from you and from God, when she chooses blatant sin. She needs to be accountable, and you mom, are the perfect one for this role!

Step Eight:
Rejoice in the One who gives new beginnings. He is faithful . . . thank Him and praise Him for every good step no matter how small. “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus,” Philippians 4:6-7.

Our prayers are with both you and your daughter. I’m sure other questions will come up as the two of you begin to communicate more. You are always welcome to ask your questions here, and please know, when we say we’re praying . . . we are!

May God bless and strengthen you.

Ideas for Devotion

Return to Original Post

Joy,

Could you give us a little more information . . .

Who is your audience?
Where will you be speaking?
How large is your group?
Do you want most to inform, inspire, challenge, persuade . . . ?

For me, anytime I share scripture I pull from my own personal experience. When and how has my light shined it's brightest? What were the surrounding circumstances when I let it grow dim? What did I learn from either that can help someone else? Just ask yourself the who, what, when, where, how, and why of your own personal experiences that validate this passage. Someone once told me they could care less what the Bible had to say about anything b/c they weren't even sure if they believed the Bible. I decided then that I would never tell someone what the Bible had to say without also sharing my life and relationship with Christ that testifies of His truth. They can argue context and many other things but when you share your testimony who can argue what you have known and experienced?

Looking forward to hearing back from you,
(you can click the comments link below
rather than go through the forms)

Thanks,
Tracie

How Do I Know if I'm a True Christian, Part 2

Back to Original Post

Back to Advice About Salvation Post - 8/17/11

Dear K,

Here's something written by John MacArthur that I think you will find helpful. This is a well written piece that takes you through the truth of God's Word to help you when you're needing assurance. Apart from the Holy Spirit, we would never desire the things of God. It simply is not part of our human nature. Our flesh, our human mind may feel a void, something not right, but apart from His work in our lives, we would simply try to fill that void with things of this world.

You can know, God is calling you to Himself. He may be calling you to salvation, or He may be calling you to surrender. Sometimes people get the two confused. The only way you can know for sure, is to spend time with Him. He will not leave you floundering. He wants you to know. You may be asking yourself, even now, “How does one begin such a process?”

For me, I got alone with my Bible. I poured my heart out to God, and asked Him to please help me settle this matter once and for all. I remember getting in the floor and reading I John. I’d read and pray, read and pray, . . . The Holy Spirit is very real. You will sense Him speaking to your heart and mind. He will confirm to you whether you are saved or not saved. For me, my salvation was confirmed, but I learned that I had not surrendered to Him. Grant it, I was a pastor’s wife, a Sunday School teacher, and a Christian for a long time by now, but somehow I had missed the fact that my life really no longer belonged to me.

Since that time in my life, I have not doubted one other time. You will find that as you spend time with Him, reading His word and obeying (by faith) the truths found within, He will continually confirm that you are His, and He will continually reveal His love and faithfulness to you.

Maybe the Lord is saying to you, I love you so much. I want you to know me personally as your Savior and Lord. Or, perhaps He is simply saying, I want a relationship with you. Open my Word, and let me teach you who I am, and the purpose I have planned for your life. O Dear one, there is nothing in all of life more beautiful than this. Don’t hesitate for one minute to get alone with Him. Be willing to push aside all the distractions of life, and determine to do this one thing that matters most.

Please let us know how you‘re doing. If you have questions, we’re here for you.

I’m praying for you,
Tracie

“And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us. Those who obey God’s commandments remain in fellowship with him, and he with them. And we know he lives in us because the Spirit he gave us lives in us,” I John 3:23-24.

Dealing With an Alcoholic Husband

Return to original post

Sharon,

I wish so desperately I had an easy answer, or a simple 1 2 3 plan to help your husband and your family. I'm not familiar with the effects of alcohol and I feel very inadequate to help in that area. However, there are people I love dearly who grew up with alcoholic fathers. Here is my observation. One young man whose father was a drunk did not have a Christian mother. She was selfish and lived her life as she pleased. The young man grew up and found Jesus, but still lives with emotional scars of his childhood. Another young man, whose father was also a drunk had a godly mother. She was faithful to love her husband through her heart wrenching disappointment, neglect, and emotional abuse; she was diligent to use every opportunity to teach truth to her children, and not make excuses for their father. Yet with great care and balance she also did not condemn him in front of them; his mother faithfully got herself and four children ready for church every time the doors opened, and she faithfully served the body of Christ without talking about her husbands faults and failures. You see both young men had similar fathers, but because their mothers were so very different the outcome for their lives were so very different. This second young man grew up with godly convictions along with the discipline and love for the Lord to adhere to the Christian heritage his mother modeled for him. As far as his dad, he learned from him too, how not to act.

You said that you’re not sure what defines one as an alcoholic. The following is a definition from The American Heritage® Stedman's Medical Dictionary:

Alcoholism al·co·hol·ism (āl'kə-hô-liz'əm)n.
The compulsive consumption and physiological dependence on alcoholic beverages. A chronic, progressive pathological condition, mainly affecting the nervous and digestive systems, caused by the excessive and habitual consumption of alcohol.

This definition along with what you’re saying, tells us that your husband is an alcoholic. The American Heritage® New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, Third Edition continues to tell us, “. . . the disease, if left unattended, worsens and can kill the sufferer. Alcoholism is marked by physical dependency and can cause disorders in many organs of the body, including the liver (see cirrhosis), stomach, intestines, and brain. It is also associated with abnormal heart rhythms, with certain cancers, and, because of loss of appetite, with poor nutrition. The cause of alcoholism is very complicated and most often involves a mixture of physical, psychological, and possibly genetic factors”

The piece that stands out most to me is this, “if left unattended, worsens and can kill the sufferer” I can’t help but think about our enemy who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He doesn’t care how he does it as long as he is successful. I’m not trying to “blame it this on the Devil” because I certainly believe that your husband has to take responsibility in this. I just want to remind you that in order to conquer this he needs some allies. This means you both may have to pull in some troops of other trustworthy Christians, such as your pastor. I know you said you weren’t sure about contacting them because they all highly respect him. I don’t know your pastor, but if he has been in the ministry for very long, he will be used to this kind of thing. I really don’t think you will take him by surprise as much as you think you would. I believe it will add some accountability to your husband that is so important. However, I wouldn’t do anything without completely covering the situation in prayer first, and then God will lead you in what He wants you to say and do. Do you think you’re husband would be willing to get help from your pastor or a Christian counselor who knows how to handle these type situations?

I am so glad that you recognize your desire to get back at your husband and hurt him is a temptation, and it’s not what God would want you to do. It wouldn’t be good for your husband, but it also wouldn’t be good for you or your teenagers. I was so thankful when I read, “I know this isn't the answer. I am hanging onto God as much as I can, and don't want to let Satan tempt me to do something I would regret.” You’re right anything outside of the Lord’s character, is something you would end up regretting. Just remember Jesus did everything in love, but He also did and said some harsh things (in love) to try to help others walk in truth. I love what James MacDonald says about speaking the truth in love. It’s straight to the point, but this is what he says, “Speaking the truth in love does not mean reducing the truth. It means disciplining yourself to speak the whole truth and nothing but the truth even if you are rejected for it. Forget your needs and get truth to the person you love, regardless of what it costs you. That is the most loving thing you can do.”

As hard as things are right now, you can be sure that God wants to love you and teach you through this too. Keep your eyes wide open. He’s always at work in our lives, every moment of everyday. He cares about every detail of our lives, and nothing get’s passed Him. The beauty of it all, He’s promised to work all things out for our good and for His glory, if we love Him! Remember, " . . . with God all things are possible." God will be with you. He will not abandon you.

In the long run, you can’t force your husband to do what is right. You can help him, you can encourage him, you can hold him accountable, you can let him reap the consequences of his actions, and you can pray for him diligently. But in the end, you are accountable for your actions. My greatest advice for you is to not neglect a single day in the presence of the Lord, both in prayer and in His word. Ask the Lord to fill those empty places your husband is leaving in your soul. Ask Him for advice, and direction. If you’re spending time with Him and listening, you’ll hear Him say, " . . . This is the way, walk ye in it!"

If you have any other questions, comments or updates please click on the guest comments link where your submission was posted and leave them there for us and we will continue to correspond through that link. The Bible gives many other examples of men and women who rose early to meet with God. Abraham (Genesis 19:27), Job (Job 1:5 ), Jacob (Genesis 28:1), Moses (Exodus 34:4),Hannah and Elkanah (I Samuel 1:19), and David (Psalm 5:3, 57:7-8)(see also Psalm 143:8, Isaiah 26:9, Ezekiel 12:8

4. Why is a plan so important? Statistics show that most people without a plan never accomplish their goals. It's an admirable goal to want to read through the Bible. So, decide on a plan and get going with it. It's my prayer that you will hunger for His word, enough to make it one of your greatest goals.

a. Chronological reading plan
tracing the development of God's plan from Adam and Eve to the church of the New Testament? This reading plan introduces you to the major people and events of the Bible in chronological order, beginning with Creation, moving through the birth and history of the Israel nation, and ending with Revelation's prophetic words. It's all broken down into 61 easily-readable segments.

b. Biographical reading plan
The advantages of this approach include ease in seeing the story of the Bible and becoming acquainted with the entire Who's Who of the Bible. As you read, be sure to thank God for what he's going to do in and through you during the months ahead!

c. Comprehensive reading plan
Read the Bible from cover to cover in one year. It takes only about fifteen minutes a day. As you read, ask the Lord to help you see the redemptive story of the Bible. It's the heartbeat of every book from Genesis to Revelation.

d. Survey Bible Reading Plan
This reading plan walks you through key passages from every book of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, in just 61 days. You'll be able to trace God's plan of salvation from start to finish in short, readable selections over the course of three months.

Want to keep it simple? Check out The One Year Bible . Here's a Bible set up into a daily reading format. Just read that days passages, and in one year you will have read the entire Bible. I like the way each day contains some of the old testament, some of the new testament, some Psalm, and some Proverbs.

So, when are you going to start? Use the My Bible Reading Plan to help you make it happen.

Why We Should Meditate on Scripture

1. It is the key to becoming like Christ If you want to become like Christ, you’ve got to spend time thinking about Him. 1 Corinthians 3:18 says "As we contemplate the Lord’s glory, we are being transformed into His likeness." As we think deeply about the Lord and about His Word, we become more and more like Him. If you want to become like Christ you have to meditate Romans 12:2 "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Meditating is part of that renewing process. When you meditate on Scripture, meditate on the Lord, that’s partially the way that God is able to renew our minds and replace those bad thoughts with good thoughts.. Proverbs 4:23 "Your life is shaped by your thoughts." The truth of the matter is we become whatever it is that we think about the most. Phillipians 4:8, "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things"

2. It is the key to answered prayer John 15:7 "If you live your life in Me, and My words live in your hearts, you can ask for whatever you like, and it will come true for you." What was the condition? If you are living in My word and my words are living in you then you can ask what you want and it will come true. The more you know Christ, the more your thoughts become His thoughts. So you have confidence when you pray because you know what you’re praying is according to God’s will. You’re confident that your own mind is in aligned with His and you’re not going to be asking for something that is totally out of His will. You can have assurance that it’s going to come true.

3. It is the key to sucess Joshua 1:8 "Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do" Why? Because we will be walking in fellowship with God.

Benefits of Memorizing Scripture

1. It helps me resist temptation. I Matthew 4, we have an example of this with Jesus in the wilderness. When the devil tempted Him, He quoted scripture every time He was tempted. He is our ultimate example. If Jesus did it, I want to do it too. Psalm 119 "I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against you."

2. It helps me make wise decisions "Your Word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path." Many times I’ve prayed, "Lord, what am I going to do now?" and a verse would pop into my mind. Because I had it memorized. If I hadn’t had it memorized the Holy Spirit couldn’t have brought it to mind.

3. It strengthens me when I’m under stress "Your promises to me are my hope. They give me strength in all my troubles. How they refresh and revive me." There can certainly be a lot of stresses in a womans life. when you’ve memorized scripture it can bring peace in the midst of any situation.

4. It comforts me when I’m sad Jeremiah 15:16, "Your words were found and I ate them, and your words become for me a joy and the delight of my heart…" Are you reading God's Word? It can't comfort you when your sad, nor can it be the joy and delight of your heart unless you are taking them in. Then you can digest them and find nourishment for your soul.

5. It helps me witness to unbelievers 1 Peter 3:15 "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." Notice Proverbs 22:18 which says "For it will be pleasant if you keep them within you, that they may be ready on your lips." Another translation says it like this, "You will be glad if you remember them and you can quote them." We can't be ready unless we have memorized scripture. We won't always have our Bibles with us unless we carry it in our hearts.

To the Ladies of the Women's Heart Ministry: Daughters of The King

I want to thank you all for your presence on Saturday. It was pure joy to be with you. I appreciate your many words of encouragement. And, to those who shared with me how God is working in your life, you were a delight to my soul.

I have already posted most of session one, and I will continue over the next several days to post the rest of my notes. It is my prayer that they will serve as a reminder to you, not towards me but towards what God has begun in your hearts. Please recognize the obstacles that will be in your path. Be ready for them, and be determined. There is no greater life than overcoming the enemy and living in complete surrender to the Savior. He longs for more of you. Let's learn from Mary's focused life and without distraction may we too sit at His feet.

Also, I would like to invite you to be a part of our online Bible study Beginning in January. It will be an amazing journey as we travel through the entire Bible in a chronological format. My goal is to keep it simple, understandable, and of practicle use for a woman's life. We will cover almost every topic imaginable, and we're going to take our time doing it. I am so excited about this opportunity. I hope you will be a part of it!

One other thing, I'd like to ask of you. Please spend some time looking over our prayer boards. If you feel like this is a vital ministry, we'd like for you to participate in responding to the prayer requests. There is a link provided on the prayer boards page that will tell you how to post your comment (prayer response). Don't let the mentors long responses intimidate you. We are simply asking you to minister as the Lord puts it on your heart. Even if it's just sharing a scripture verse with her or letting your sister know that there's one more person out there praying for her.

We would appreciate your help in this area for several reasons.
1. It encourages the one seeking prayer to know how many people are praying for her.
2. It encourages us to see women ministering to eachother as this ministry was intended.
3. We are growing! We are in the process of adding several new boards for next year. This is exciting, but it take a lot of time and attention. So, if you're willing, we need your help.

May God bless you as you seek a greater relationship with Him, I am praying for you. You have been a blessing to me, and I hope we have another opportunity to spend some time together.

In His Grace,
Tracie

His Precepts-Bible Study Acrostic

His . . .

P-ray first and ask God to teach you more about Him.

R-ead a passage, it’s best to have a plan (see below).

E-xample to follow-Ask yourself is there an example to follow in this scripture? Think of Paul in prison, feet and hands bound, there fore years. But what was Paul’s attitude? To whine nd complain? Paul’s attitude was joyous. That tells me there’s an example that I need to follow. In the difficult circumstances of my life instead of responding with whining and complaining, I’m to respond like Paul did. With rejoicing.

C-ommand to obey- Command to Obey is the next. Is there a command to obey? God does not give us options in His Word. He does not say, "Would you please love each other if you’re having a nice day and everything’s going ok." God just says, "Love each other from the heart. You’ve been cleansed from sin, now love each other." Much of what God gives to us are flat out commands that we are to obey whether we feel like it or not.

E-rror to avoid-Is there an error to avoid? Do you remember Ananias and Sapphira in the book of Acts. They did a real stupid thing. They lied to God. Because they lied to God, God killed them on the spot. That tells me that is an error to avoid! I do not want to lie to God. There is consequences. So when we come to Scriptures like that, write it down. There’s an error to avoid.

P - Is there a Promise to claim?

T - Truth to believe. The same as with commands to obey, there are some difficult truths in scripture. We have the obligation and responsibility to believe them whether we understand them or not. If you come across some passage of scripture and think, "This does not make sense at all" rather than arguing with God about it, rather than saying, "Until I understand it I’m not going to obey it," you just say, "God, this is a truth You’ve said. I’m going to believe it and trust that in the days and years to come, You will make it clear to me what You meant by this."

S - Is there a Sin to confess? As I’m looking at this passage of scripture do I see a sin here that I need to confess from my own life. Almost always -- God is so good to show us sins that need to be confessed. I never can come away from the Word without finding something in my life that I need to confess to the Lord.

S - Something to thank God for. There is always something in Scripture that you can praise the Lord for. It’s either about Him, His character, something He’s done for you or someone else. Cultivate that heart of gratitude as you read through scripture and meditate.

"Let your roots grow down into Him and draw up nourishment from him, so you will grow in faith, strong and vigorous in the truth you were taught. Let your lives overflow with thanksgiving for all He has done." Colosians 2:7

How Do I Begin to Study the Bible

There are two essential ingredients to any Bible study.
1. prayer
2. share
The rest is just helpful ideas.

Remember Mary's secret was choosing the eternal over the temporal, and keeping her eyes on Jesus (Luke 10:38-42). Let's follow her example to the feet of Jesus.

I'm praying for you,
Tracie

I. Helpful Tools
a. A reliable Bible translation you can easily understand. Not a paraphrase.
b. A cute Notebook/pen (Journaling is important!)
c. A Bible Dictionary
d. A Bible Concordance
e. E-Sword (If you have a computer you can download it at e-sword.net for free)

I would like to suggest to you a Bible reference tool; The Three-In-One Concise Bible Reference Companion by Thomas Nelson Publishers. This is a dictionary, a concordance, and a topical index all in one. I paid $14.99 for mine (christianbook.com usually has it on sale for $9.99)and it has proved to be an invaluable study tool.

II. Types of Studies
[It is recommended that you choose a particular book and study it in the following order]

A. A birds eye view
1. Choose a book and read it through.
2. Look out for verses that reveal the author’s purpose for writing the book.
3. Look out for verses that reveal the theme of the book.
4. Mark natural divisions within the book.
5. Make a note of things that interest you and things you do not understand.

B. Chapter by chapter study
1. Read a chapter and write a summary of it in your own words.
2. Make a note of the natural divisions within each chapter.
3. Make a note of things that interest you and things you do not understand.

C. Verse by verse study
1. Read through each verse and then rewrite it in your own words.
2. Divide the verse into individual segments and comment on each.
3. Make a note of things of interest and make a note of words you do not understand.

D. Word study
1. Choose a particular word from list you made in your previous study.
2. Look up the meaning of it in a Greek dictionary
3. Look up the Strong’s number of this word in Strong’s Dictionary and then, using a Greek concordance, see how the word is translated and used throughout the Scriptures.
4. Then see how your understanding of the word gives a greater understanding to the verses in which it appears.

E. Biographical study
1. Choose a particular Bible character (Jesus, Paul, etc).
2. Find out all you can about that person physically: when they born, where they were born, their nationality, who their parents were, etc.
3. Find out all you can about that person spiritually: What struggles did they have, what lessons were learned, How did God work in their lives, etc.

F. Topical study
1. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" Psalm 90:9b,12

Benjamin Franklin said, ". . . Do not squander time for that is the stuff that life is made of"

How can we practically be a good steward of our time? It begins by knowing our priorities. Scripture tells us that our first priority is a relationship with God then all others (including yourself) should come after Him.

Mark 12:30-31 says, "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these"

Others can’t receive on overflow of love if God isn’t first. You weren’t meant to make everyone happy. You can’t and you won’t no matter how hard you try; It will only cause you misery. Focus on first things first and all other things will work out.

How do I know this? Scripture promises it. Matthew 6:33 says, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" We all have different responsibilities and circumstances, but one thing that is true for all is our first priority is to God alone. He has promised us that when this priority is in place, He’ll take care of the rest. YOU CAN TRUST HIM ON THIS!

Okay, so we know our first priority, but the problem is really that I don’t have enough time in a day. Have you ever said this? I know I have. Reality is God knew what He was doing when He gave us 24 hours in our days. If we have more than we can do in this time frame there’s a problem probably stemming from one of the following four areas:

1. We have not learned the importance of time management
2. We have not learned how to manage our time wisely according to our priorities
3. We have too much on our plates.
4. We have not recognized our time management as a spiritual battle

I will be addressing the first three problems in part II of this series, Time Matters. The third problem will be covered in part III, and Part IV will be How To Have a Meaningful Quiet Time. We will also cover the following topics in this series: Identifying our time enemies, Eliminating schedule clutter, Planning with purpose, The art of delegating, and Knowing when and how to say NO!

In the meantime, Let’s accept nothing less than God’s best for our lives. It begins with God; as a matter of fact it’s all about Him! Leaving Him out or giving Him our leftovers is settling for less than He intended for your life. If you are loaded down with too many responsibilities and cares, give it all to Jesus.

"Jesus said, Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" Matthew 11:29-30

Why don't you start, even now, and ask Him to give you a hunger for Him. Open His word; read it, study it, and apply it. If your not sure where to begin, Psalm and Proverbs are always good. You can also follow this chronological 61 day reading plan provided by Biblegateway. Or, I know You would enjoy reading The Biographical Bible reading plan also by Biblegateway; it is basically an overview of who's who in the Bible. I know I've learned a lot from their examples. Everything from courage and strength to heartache and pain. They were imperfect people who struggled just like we do, yet God's people through His grace found Him faithful to work in their lives and through their lives. I hope you enjoy Your time with the Lord. I know God will bless you as you seek Him. Proverbs 8:17 says, "I love those who love me, and those who seek me find me"

In Honor & Remembrance of 911

The gift of memory is wrapped with the bow of our heart's thoughts. For so long I did not realize that the desire I had to serve Him could only come from Him. I want you to know, whatever area of service He’s calling you to, You have the power, in Christ, to accomplish that work.

Are you aware of the Power of the Holy Spirit within you? Do you tend to say, "Yes, Lord!" or "Yes, Lord I sure want to, BUT I can’t do that; it’s just to big. Don’t you want someone better, prettier, funnier, smarter . . . "? Let me tell you, I made the mistake of asking Him this. Do you know the scripture He impressed on me? It was I Corinthians 1:27. "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty"

He was agreeing with me. This is not usually the encouragement we’re looking for is it? What we want to hear is this, "Oh, you can do it." or " You’d be great at that." But, the truth is He knows I’m weak and foolish and He still considers me useful. Why? The remainder of the chapter explains the reason. He get’s the greatest glory!

Would you Just say yes to Him, right now? You know in your heart what He desires of you. I know it probably seems way too big. You may even find yourself fearful. Please remember, just as salvation comes by grace through faith, we must realize that our calling and our gifts aren’t because we’re worthy or capable. It’s because of His grace and in faith we must allow Him to work in us.

Hebrews 11:6 tells us, " For without Faith it’s impossible to please Him."

It took several years for me to realize every time I said, " I can’t", I was really saying, " No." I was focused on myself and my own inadequecies. The results were missed opportunities that God had laid before me. Are you headed down this same path? If so, I want to head you off now. Please don’t waste your time, or His. It’s a dead end street. You do not have to know all the answers, you do not need to have a higher education, and you do not have to obtain the seal of approval from your friends. Place your trust in Him and realize the power of His Holy Spirit within you.

You have nothing to loose if you’re seeking His will and following His lead. Whatever the outcome, you will have been found faithful. Listen to Him...Hear Him say...

"My grace is sufficient for you: my strength is made perfect in weakness." 2Corinthians 12:9

Sharing Together: Devotions & Wisdom

Hi Girlfriends,

I have enjoyed reading Oswald Chambers devotions so much, I thought I'd share this time with you. His daily devotions are short and sweet, but he gives you a lot to think about.

Of course, this is not intended to replace your normal Bible study or your personal quiet time, but I think you will enjoy his work. I know I have. Please post your comments and let me know your thoughts. I'd love to hear from you.

Also, I'm writing a Bible study on spiritual gifts. Would you please share your experiences. Your wisdom is greatly appreciated. I'd also like to hear from those who have questions concerning spiritual gifts? What would you like to learn? If you have an extra minute, I'd like for you to take the Spiritual Gifts poll (You will find it to the right of my blog). This will help as I research and prepare for this study. What is sacrifice? Webster’s Dictionary defines it as, "the forfeiture of something highly valued for the sake of one considered to have a greater value."Because He died for us, lets practice living for Him!

I know scripture tells us that obedience is greater than sacrifice. But, in being obedient to God we often find ourselves with conflict, due to our own desires.

One of the most refreshing days of my life was the day I declared Opposite Day. I’m sure you’ve heard children playing this game; it goes something like this.
Mom: Honey, go clean your room.
Child: No Ma’am.
Mom: Excuse me
Child: It’s opposite day mom; Yes means no and no means yes.
Mom: Well, that’s not going to get you off the hook if you tell me no again.

Sound familiar? This is only an example of what I’m talking about. What I mean is doing the opposite of our inclinations. Telling ourselves no to the desires of the flesh so we can say yes to Him.

For example, I remember waking up and thinking this bed feels so good, I think I’ll let myself sleep in this morning. No, I have to do opposite today, so I got up. I think I want donuts for breakfast. I know this is not best for me, I’ll do the opposite. I need to do such and such (you fill in the blank) today, but I’ll wait until tomorrow. No, I’m going to do it now because normally I would procrastinate, and today is Opposite Day. Do you see where I’m going with this? It may sound crazy, but I challenge you to an Opposite Day.

Should Opposite Day be like a holiday and come once a year? No, everyday should be Opposite Day. God sure blesses it when we do things His way instead of our own. I will tell you this, it takes practice and discipline, but the rewards are worth the effort.

"And, the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever." Isaiah 32:17

"Take heed of forming plans for happiness, as though it lay in the things of this world, which soon pass away. Do not fall in with the customs of those who walk in the lusts of the flesh, and mind earthly things. The work of the Holy Ghost first begins in the understanding, and is carried on to the will, affections, and conversation, till there is a change of the whole man into the likeness of God, in knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness. Thus, to be godly, is to give up ourselves to God." -Matthew Henry

When you face choices today, remember, There is great pleasure and reward in giving yourself up to Him.

Have a great Opposite day in the Lord!

Loving Jesus

Sermon Notes: John 14:15
02.05.06

These last several months, following Hurricane Katrina, have been testing times for thousands of us. Here are some.

Go Tell (Matthew 28:19)

Be Holy (I Peter 1:16)

Be Separate (I John 2:15)

Love God (Matthew 22:37)

Love Others (John 13:34)

All His commands involve our respect and concern for Him. It’s easy to sing Oh, How I Love Jesus, but it can be cheap if our lives do not back up the word of our testimony.

Loving Jesus is not an emotional thing. It involves emotions, but it’s not dependant on them.
To love Jesus is not just a rational commitment. We don’t just decide to love Jesus, although we should, but it’s actually doing it that matters. It’s not a state of mind or a matter of disciplining yourself to Him, that’s discipleship, not love. We love Him for who He is.

Revelation gives us a glimpse of God’s perspective. The cross is not something of the distant past. The cross is ever before Him, and it should be for us too. This should define our life, a life of loving Jesus.

Where Are You Going?

Sermon Notes: John 14:5-7

In the previous chapter we find that Jesus has just tried to explain to His disciples that He's getting ready to go away (His cruxifixion, death, resurrection, and assention to Heaven). He tries to explain that where He's going they can't come for now, but later they will reunite with Him in Heaven. Now Jesus is trying to comfort His disciples with these words.

"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:1-6

Thomas was being realistic and honest. He said he didn't have any idea where Jesus was going, so how could he possibly know how to get there. You probably know people, in your circle of influence, that don't have a clue. The same answer Jesus gave to Thomas is the same answer we can tell our friends. Jesus is the way, He is the truth, and He is the life. There is no other way.

What about other religious views? Let me give you an example. Yesterday a man came in the hardware store and asked to use the phone. He had a map in his hands and was obviously lost. The map lookes legitimate, it was printed from the internet, but it was wrong. I knew where he wanted to go, and how to get there. I was able to point him in the right direction and he easily found his destination.

As Christians, our destination is Heaven. Our map, the Bible, is true. Jesus did not say I am a way. He said, "I am the way..." This is what the Bible tells us concerning any other view. "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Proverbs 14:12

I have heard people say that you have to believe what makes you comfortable and feel good. I know other people who believe they are good enough, but we have no merits of our own. This is what the enemy wants you to believe, because these lies will send you to Hell. However, if you believe the truth found in Jesus Christ, the sinless sacrificial Lamb, the embodiment of truth, you will have everlasting life and a home in Heaven.

What are you trusting to get you to Heaven? Sometimes, like Thomas, we just need reminding. Sometimes, we need to remind or tell others. Let the light of Christ shine in you. Time will end and so will your opportunity to share or accept the gift of salvation.

Have you settled on where you will spend eternity? In other words, Do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ? Jesus said, "I go to prepare a place for you." My question to you, "Where are you going?" Therefore, we should keep our cameras close, even though it's not convenient to do so. We must be ready to capture Life's precious moments. I remember learning this the hard way when I missed my daughters first acrobatic performance. I went to the next room to retrieve my camera, but by the time I returned, the show was over. My opportunity had passed.

What’s a mom to do? I thought, "I know, I’ll re-create the situation." So, I repositioned her little hands and feet, and stepped back to seize time. Trust me, she was no longer a cute acrobat. Oh, I got a picture, but it was not the original beautiful, smiling baby. No, her smiling face had turned to a shriveled up frown and her laughter to a high pitch cry. Simply put, I missed my moment.

I wonder how many times my Heavenly Father looks down, and say’s, " Oh, you missed that one." Are we ready for the opportunities He brings our way? The opportunities to tell others about His Hope and Salvation. Those are the moments that matter most. They bring others to God, fill your life with joy, and cause God to smile. When you find your attentions distracted, ask yourself, "Am I making the most of the opportunity at hand?" Times like these are not forgotten, they are eternally imprinted on the heart of God.

"Live wisely among those who are not Christians, and make the most of every opportunity." Colossians 4:5 NLT
